To the Greeks, character was fate. More than accident, and certainly more than willpower, his inborn pattern of action and response determined how a man’s life turned out. The equivalent influence in an art gallery is architecture. At the A Gallery, for example, a featured artist can […]
Van Chu at The Gallery at Library Square. Photo by Zoe Rodriguez. It would be a disservice to Van Chu to spend the majority of this article discussing the unfortunate pairing of his work with photographs by Carl Oelerich, so the criticism will be brief. Chu’s latest exhibit, Photographic […]
by Melissa Smolley There are places that invoke a type of deep seeded serenity within us. They aren’t necessarily the most picturesque, or even the most inhabitable, yet something about these places resonates stillness within. Such places invite inquiry and encourage exploration, both intrinsically and externally. When […]
by Kelly Green Walk into a painter’s studio and it’s all about color: on the palette, on the canvases, dripped on the floor and spilled in every corner. A sculptor’s studio, on the other hand, is all about line. The colors tend to be muted when not completely […]
Rebecca C. Durham is the Executive Director of Utah Chamber Artists and has sung with the professional ensemble since it began in 1991. She received an M.A. in Musicology from the University of Utah and was the first director of the School of Music’s Virtuoso Series at Libby Gardner […]
Have you noticed anything different about Salt Lake Art Center lately? More lectures by guest artists (one almost every week)? Greater presence in the social media? And, what’s this? They want feedback from the art community? Saturday afternoon SLAC’s executive director Adam Price formally introduced his latest organizational […]
On a recent trip I picked up two books about the contemporary art world, Everything You Wanted to Know About Gallerists But Were Afraid to Ask, an interview format book dealing with fifty-one gallerists from all over the world that seemed a light enough read to flip through […]
“Being with me is an act of imagination . . .” —Margaret Fuller I know what you’re thinking because I thought it too: a play about Margaret Fuller, a second-tier member of an exanimate, obsolete, New England American, quasi-religious literary and philosophical movement, itself a mere sequel […]
Wading in Context A response to Ernesto Pujol’s Awaiting. On Thursday, April 8th, Ernesto Pujol led dozens of participants through a 12-hour, site-specific performance called Awaiting, a project he discussed in the recent edition of 15 Bytes. I suspect the local Mormon audience found resonance in Pujol’s mission […]
Balanchine’s America at Ballet West reviewed by Alexa Gamble It is easy to watch Balanchine. His choreography is visually engaging and active. His ballets rarely have a narrative, focusing instead on the abstract ideas of pure movement, space, musicality and emotion. One of the twentieth century’s foremost choreographers, […]
“Although sculpture remains difficult to show, difficult to sell and difficult to own (perhaps the exact reasons why it flourishes so well in the public domain), it seems to me that there is a subtle but growing interest in sculpture and what is sculpture,” says Josh Kanter, a […]
If you hear a riveting chorus of: “Brekekekex! Brekekekex! Ko-ax, ko-ax!” and you didn’t sign up for an evening of Aristophanes, you would be correct in thinking you are in store for another intelligent play from Plan-B Theatre Company. Eric Samuelsen’s AMERIGO is a wicked mixture of “The […]
Photos by Hikmet Sidney Loe Robert Smithson’s first career choice was “naturalist.” As he shifted his gaze towards art, his lifelong fascination with the materials of the earth and with the transformations that time manifests became incorporated into his work. The Spiral Jetty best embodies this synthesis […]
John Hughes painting at String LakeThe title here says it all. If an artist can distill visual realities down to a few simple shapes of value and color he/she will finally begin to understand the painting process. Try this sometime (at first it will feel a little strange […]
photos by Zoe Rodriguez Every successful business must continuously scan the environment, reassess its performance and goals, and make adjustments as needed. Art galleries, like UTah Artists Hands, are no exception. Owner Pam O’Mara may have found the perfect business reincarnation with the transformation of her gallery space into half-gallery, […]
Through April 9th, the Utah Arts Festival’s gallery space, galleryuaf, features three unique Utah artists in an exhibit entitled Mandmade Truth. One of the artists, Mallory Qualls, uses photography and ciabachrome prints to create abstract paintings. Qualls manipulates scenes, rooted in reality, to answer the question, “Can photography […]
by Lane Bachman More impressive than any of the films I have seen by Mathew Barney himself is the documentary film about him, No Restraint. Basically, this is a “making of” picture for his recentish endeavors. The narrative is a story of creatures (in this case, humans) who are […]
Growing up in Southern California, my summers were spent at the beach, where the menacing call of its flying inhabitants loomed over our play like the marine layer that blocked out the sun. Our trips were split between playing in the sand and deciding which one of us […]
In a ritual repeated countless times since its dedication in 1877 in the presence of Brigham Young, the Manti Temple serves as backdrop for the celebratory portrait of a newly wed couple. Emerging from the venerable Gothic and French Revival masterpiece in which they have just been sealed […]
