In The Intervening Substance, Nicole Banowetz transforms the microscopic world into an immersive sculptural environment inspired by radiolarians, deep-sea jellyfish, and other organisms that inhabit the ocean’s least explored depths. Drawing on forms found in the animal, plant, mineral, and bacterial kingdoms, Banowetz uses the natural world as a metaphor for human relationships while inviting viewers to consider the vast diversity of life that remains hidden beneath the surface. The installation serves as both a celebration of nature’s complexity and a reminder of the fragile environments that deserve protection.
Banowetz works across sculpture, installation, design, and education. A graduate of Colorado State University, she has exhibited internationally in Europe and Asia as well as throughout the United States. Her work is included in the permanent collections of the Denver Children’s Museum, the Denver Zoo, the Amsterdam Light Festival Light Art Collection, and the Kids Awesome Museum in Taipei.
