Pixelated explores the intersection of digital culture, public art, and contemporary sculpture through ten large-scale works installed across Utah State University’s Logan campus. Inspired by the simplified graphics of early video games such as Pac-Man and Space Invaders, Mike Whiting combines the visual language of 8-bit pixels with the formal restraint of Minimalist sculpture. Using welded steel and automotive paint, his colorful sculptures examine themes of the natural and artificial world, play, movement, technology, and wellbeing, while revealing the unexpected connections between digital imagery and modernist art.
