Panel Discussion & Reception:
Wednesday, January 28, 2026, 5:30–7:00 pm (Roundtable panel at Russell/Wanlass Performance Hall), followed by a reception with refreshments and live music from 7:00–8:30 pm at the museum. Admission is free and open to the public.
The Lure and Lore of the West explores the blurred boundary between Western myth and historical fact, tracing how stories of the region have been shaped by imagination, exploration, and the land itself. Spanning works from the late nineteenth century to the present, the exhibition features images of iconic Western figures—prospectors, pioneers, cowboys, and outlaws—alongside myths and monsters, including a life-sized Bigfoot skeleton “unearthed” by artist Clayton Bailey. The exhibition also reflects on the West’s rugged landscapes as both inspiration and resource, with photographs by Ansel Adams, Harry Reuben Reynolds, and Ralph Clark documenting Western state and national parks increasingly pressured by tourism and development. As wilderness recedes, the exhibition asks what stories will endure, what new legends will arise, and which wild places will remain for future generations.
