Material presents Every Rock is a Cloud, a solo exhibition by Utah-based artist Collin Bradford exploring the landscape and our place within it through the expansive scale of geologic time. Working across video, photography, sculpture and drawing, Bradford considers perception, language, scale and time, asking viewers to see apparently permanent features of the landscape as temporary arrangements of matter. Inspired in part by Bradford’s move from the Great Lakes region to Utah and his encounter with the state’s exposed geology, the exhibition considers rocks, mountains and clouds as forms undergoing continual transformation at radically different speeds. Against a backdrop of drought, wildfire and climate change, the works shift between human and geologic scales to reconsider what permanence means. As Bradford writes, “Every stone is fleeting. Every rock is a cloud.”
