Now in its second year, the Avenues Open Studios is an event that almost wasn’t. Artist Anne Albaugh originally pitched the idea to showcase the large number of artists in Salt Lake City’s Avenues neighborhood by holding an open studio event in August 2014. Her idea generated interest […]
In the century and a half since photography rose up to challenge painting as an image source, artists have invented countless strategies for incorporating photos into their working methods. Some use snapshots to replace the traditional sketch book. Others primarily paint things they could never see in person, […]

It goes on all over our country — housing developments sprout up on the outer rims of our suburban areas, attracting young homeowners looking for the amenities of suburban living along with the promise of open spaces. In a few years time, though, those fields and prairies are […]
There’s a hint of cruelty in the Rio Gallery’s choice to devote August, a month most people spend wearing as little as modesty permits, to the subject of clothing. Among the nine artists here, there are enough heavy garments, long-sleeved shirts, and gloves to bring a suggestible viewer […]
“This is outrageous,” erupts Chicana artist Ruby Chacon on Facebook about the West Jordan mural set-to. “What are people thinking?!?! Seriously . . . I don’t get this mentality.” For those who haven’t followed the probably-only-in-Utah story, widely covered by media, it goes something like this – many […]
In Yolande Harris’s current exhibit at the Woodbury Museum of Art the artist uses sound, light and installation to upend the senses.
On Monday, Lynnette Hiskey stepped down as Director of the Utah Division of Arts & Museums after two years in the position. She previously had served as the department’s assistant director and was promoted to the new position after Margaret Hunt resigned in 2013. Hiskey’s departure was sudden […]
The weeks of August are truly the doldrums for art exhibitions, no less in Utah than elsewhere. For whatever reasons—the population crowding their vacations into what’s left of the summer, the colleges that house many of the nonprofit galleries being between semesters, perhaps some artists already looking ahead […]
William (“Bill”) Evans’ RDT-sponsored solo concert at the Rose Wagner was completely captivating. The dancer was, by turns, nostalgic, frenetic, smooth, effervescent, hilarious, and always, always an outstanding performer just givin’ it his all. What a memorable night for those fortunate enough to have been there. Had he […]
On July 16, in the Harris Fine Arts Building, a traditional showcase for BYU student projects, senior Katie Marie Liechty installed what might have been intended to be three separate ensembles, although the complete installation also works well as one compound work. Given the subject matter of this […]
The good side: as these three stories demonstrate, the general public is not completely indifferent to art. The bad side: it seems people only really care about art when they don’t like it. Bill Evans was always so damned cool. I mean the man could dance and he could party. I knew this a long, long time ago in college and I understand that he still is and still does at the age of 75. In celebration of his birthday, […]

Darl Thomas’ sculpture makes the invisible (the wind) visible as the sculpture slowly rotates with the breeze. It’s location at Fire Station #9, west of the Salt Lake International Airport, means it gets plenty of winds, and most days you’ll be able to see its slow rotation. […]
The creeks that flow into Salt Lake City have helped to shape the east bench neighborhoods, but just as important is the Wasatch Fault Line, which basically runs along 1300 East and is the reason there’s a steep drop off west of the thoroughfare. Few of the residents […]
