Artist Talk & Reception: Tuesday, July 1, 6–7:30 p.m.
In his 27th solo exhibition, Crowded Spaces, Utah artist John Sproul presents a striking series of paintings that explore disconnection, emotional vulnerability, and the silent barriers between people. Using figures drawn from everyday encounters—friends, family, strangers—Sproul captures the quiet alienation of modern life. His compositions depict groups of figures that remain psychologically isolated, caught in spaces where contact is impossible and visibility is fractured.
With acid-toned, abraded color fields and raw, expressive forms, these works investigate the paradox of being surrounded yet unseen. Sproul’s practice, rooted in introspection and a desire for honesty, is as much about personal ritual as it is social commentary. Through it, he seeks to dismantle internal walls and foster empathy—both in himself and in his viewers.
