The Southern Utah Museum of Art revisits one of Utah’s most significant community art initiatives with Art for All: The Cedar City Art Exhibit, 1940–2008. First organized in 1940 by local art teacher Eugene Jorgensen and the Cedar City Art Committee, the annual exhibition showcased works by local, regional, and national artists for nearly seven decades. The show became a cornerstone of arts education and community engagement, with artworks purchased each year for both the city and local schools.
This exhibition presents highlights from the collections of SUMA and the Iron County School District, including works by Maynard Dixon, Eve Drewelowe, and Jimmie Jones. It also contextualizes the exhibit’s New Deal-era roots in the Federal Art Project’s Community Art Center Program, which sought to make art accessible to all Americans.
