Matt Herron: I’m Walkin’ For My Freedom at The Gallery at Library Square

Salt Lake City
October 25 – December 5, 2025

Opening Reception: Saturday, October 25, 4:00–5:30 PM

Photographer Matt Herron (1931–2020) devoted his lens to documenting the struggle for civil rights in America during the 1960s. I’m Walkin’ For My Freedom features a powerful selection of Herron’s photographs from that defining era—images that capture both the courage and humanity of those who fought for equality in the face of systemic oppression.

The exhibition is presented by the Center for Documentary Expression and Art (CDEA), a Utah-based nonprofit that promotes documentary arts and education programs exploring history, diversity, and social life. Through Herron’s photographs—published in Life, Time, Look, and Newsweek—viewers witness a visual record of a movement that reshaped a nation.

Herron founded the Southern Documentary Project in 1963 and received the World Press Photo Contest award in 1965 for his searing image of a Mississippi police officer beating a child. His work resides in the permanent collections of the George Eastman House, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.
