In How the Hell Did I Get Here?, Cottonwood Heights artist Jason Jacobson presents mixed-media paintings that function as oversized journal pages, moving between self-reflection and observations of contemporary society. Drawing on his Gen-X Midwestern upbringing and nearly 30 years as a graphic artist, Jacobson works across abstraction and abstract realism, combining varied materials and processes to explore mortality, fear, loss, mental health, social issues and the search for self-understanding.
For Jacobson, the work favors emotional immediacy over stylistic consistency, embracing what he calls “progress over perfection” while asking viewers to recognize something of their own experiences in his.
