In An Ecological Reckoning: Tar Seeps of The Great Salt Lake, Trent Alvey presents a body of altered photographic works centered on the petroleum seeps of Rozel Point near Spiral Jetty. Emerging as the Great Salt Lake recedes, these ancient tar pools become both ecological warning signs and metaphors for environmental collapse, preserving traces of animals, histories, and human consequence within the exposed lakebed. Alvey’s images examine the paradoxical beauty and devastation of a damaged landscape, embedding scientific and environmental realities into layered visual forms that evoke loss, memory, and reckoning. A pioneering Utah multimedia artist working across installation, assemblage, sound, and photography, Alvey has exhibited widely throughout the United States and is recognized for ambitious interdisciplinary works engaging perception, ecology, and social consciousness.
