UMOCA’s Fieldworks: Canyonlands

UMOCA’s Fieldworks: Canyonlands invites a cohort of 20–25 regional artists to a 4–5 day creative retreat in rural southeast Utah, exploring human connection to landscape in the American West.

Hosted in partnership with The Nature Conservancy’s Canyonlands Research Center (CRC), participants will engage with scientific research across multiple disciplines, join a regional arts dialogue about land in the West, and forge new connections that bridge artistic practice and place.

Now in its second year, Fieldworks draws inspiration from UMOCA’s exhibition, Altered States in the Acid West, which revisits the “acid western” film subgenre to challenge Western myths, stereotypes, and storytelling conventions. In this shared spirit, participating artists will respond creatively to the layered histories and present realities of Utah’s iconic landscapes, generating new work and dialogue around regional identity, myth, and memory.

Eligibility: Priority is given to artists based in Utah and the Four Corners region, as well as new applicants.

Duration: May 28 – June 1, 2026
