Deadline: October 30, 2026, 5 p.m. MT
Commission: Up to $90,000
The City of South Salt Lake and South Salt Lake Arts are seeking qualifications from artists or artist-led design teams to create a permanent, large-scale artistic shade structure for Water Tower Plaza. The signature piece will serve as both a functional shade structure and an artistic landmark for approximately 1,025 square feet of lawn space. The City is particularly interested in work that incorporates light and shadow while complementing the plaza’s iconic water tower.
The opportunity is open to artists and designers age 18 and older living in the United States. Applicants should have demonstrated experience with large-scale outdoor installations, structural materials and collaboration with municipal departments and engineers. Three finalists will be selected, with each receiving a $3,000 proposal-development stipend; for the artist receiving the final commission, that stipend will be treated as an advance against the project budget.
The selected artist or team will be responsible for design, engineering, fabrication, transportation and installation, with completion anticipated in spring 2027.
Location: Water Tower Plaza, 195 W. Oakland Ave., South Salt Lake, UT 84115
Application Deadline: October 30, 2026, 5 p.m. MT
