In Rebirth & Healing, Nancy Steele-Makasci presents watercolor paintings and traditional Japanese mokuhanga woodblock prints inspired by her 2024 residency at MI-LAB in Echizen, Japan. Influenced by the history of Japanese woodblock printing, Steele-Makasci combines watercolor with Japanese-style hake brushes, using repeated brushstrokes to create luminous fields of color through a process she describes as meditative and restorative.
The exhibition reflects the artist’s lifelong commitment to artmaking and her belief in the value of persistence, continual learning, and daily creative practice. Through works that emphasize color, rhythm, and process, Steele-Makasci invites viewers to experience moments of solace, repose, and the instinctive joy she finds in painting and printmaking.
An interdisciplinary artist and educator, Steele-Makasci is Professor of Art in the Department of Art & Design at Utah Valley University, where she teaches painting, drawing, printmaking, and art education. Her practice spans painting, printmaking, drawing, and book arts, and her recent work has been shaped by her study of traditional Japanese woodblock printing techniques.
