Loose parts ~ a child’s way of knowing at Salt Lake City Public Library Main Library

Salt Lake City, Utah
March 5 – April 19, 2026
Reception: March 14, 2–3 pm

Artist Alise Anderson presents Loose parts ~ a child’s way of knowing, an interactive exhibition of sculptural works inspired by early childhood learning. Installed in the Children’s Gallery at the Main Library, the exhibition draws on Anderson’s experience as an early childhood educator and explores how children learn through physical engagement with materials—lifting, stacking, dragging, pressing, and repeating.

Working with paper clay, loose parts, and large-scale forms, Anderson creates sculptures that function not only as objects but as invitations. Visitors—especially children—are encouraged to touch, move, and interact with the works. The exhibition reflects the logic of children’s making: provisional, responsive, and unconcerned with finish. Rather than treating play as preparation for something else, the work presents play itself as a form of thinking.

By situating the exhibition in a children’s library and encouraging direct engagement with the sculptures, Anderson highlights early childhood learning as complex, meaningful, and deserving of public space.
