Benjamin Gawle is a ceramic artist, author-illustrator, and registered nurse based in Salt Lake City, Utah. Originally from Michigan, he earned his psychology and art degrees from Michigan State University in 2001. While collaborating with The Institute of a Now Culture (ThINC) in Syracuse, New York, he began developing Baxter, a recurring character used to explore themes of positivity and consciousness.
Benjamin completed his MFA in ceramics at the University of Utah in 2003, focusing on vinyl masking techniques, text and imagery in clay, and kinetic sculpture. He spent subsequent years as a potter and adjunct professor before pursuing a career in nursing.
Today, Benjamin works at University of Utah Health while teaching pottery classes at his personal studio. He lives with his wife, Jaimie, and their two children, Kaz and Ethan, continuing to draw Baxter and finding inspiration in everyday life and relationships.
