Sam Davis is a Utah–based artist whose photographic work filters family history, pulp culture, and speculative science through a lens of curiosity and invention. Originally from Pensacola, Florida, he received his BFA in Creative Photography from the University of Florida and his MFA in Photography and Sculpture from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Stories from his own lineage—including a father who participated in atomic testing in the 1950s and ancestors who worked on Civil War–era submarines—often surface in his images, which blur technology, science fiction, childhood fantasy, and kitsch. Davis uses this collision of reference points to complicate nostalgia and expand the terrain of memory, asking viewers to hold both skepticism and delight.
He teaches analog and alternative process photography as Associate Professor of Photography at Southern Utah University.
