In Survival Instincts, Bianca Velasquez presents six intricate beadwork pieces examining the brutal and beautiful mechanisms of survival found in the natural world. Drawing parallels between insect behavior and human relationships, the exhibition explores themes of love, power, reproduction, and control through painstakingly mapped and constructed surfaces that balance delicacy with visceral intensity. From scorpions’ lethal mating rituals to the damselfly’s emergence into flight, Velasquez uses beadwork to reveal survival as both instinctual and psychologically charged. A beadwork and process artist working across painting, poetry, and abstraction, Velasquez approaches repetition and materiality as forms of meditation, healing, and narrative transformation.
