In The Orders: Insects in Watercolor, Heath Ogden presents a series of paintings exploring the extraordinary diversity of the insect world. An entomologist by profession, Ogden set out to paint representatives of all 31 insect “orders,” groups that reflect the evolutionary branches of insects from a shared ancestor. The watercolor paintings accompany a phylogenetic tree illustrating the evolutionary relationships between these groups, while additional works from his book The Orders: Insects in Watercolor are also included in the exhibition. Through these detailed studies—from humble houseflies to striking mantids—Ogden highlights the beauty and complexity of insects that are often overlooked in art and everyday life.
