Storywork: The Prints of Marie Watt at UMFA

Salt Lake City
February 21 – June 21, 2026

Storywork: The Prints of Marie Watt, drawn from the collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation, surveys more than three decades of work by multimedia artist Marie Watt. A member of the Seneca Nation with German-Scots ancestry, Watt blends Indigenous and non-Indigenous storytelling traditions, drawing from sources that range from Greco-Roman mythology and Indigenous oral narratives to pop culture, music, and science fiction.

Featuring more than sixty artworks, the exhibition centers on Watt’s collaborative printmaking practice, developed in partnership with master printers at Crow’s Shadow Institute of the Arts, the Tamarind Institute, and the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology. Installed in the museum’s special exhibition galleries, the print retrospective is complemented by monumental blanket stacks, hanging textiles, and sculptural works that expand her exploration of memory, community, and shared narrative. Through collaboration and storytelling, Watt’s work reflects the idea that stories evolve through collective experience and exchange.
