Salt Lake City
May 11 – June 21, 2026
Reception: Saturday, May 16, 3–5 pm
In 35 Years of Not Painting, Jessica Smith presents a series of portrait paintings that reflect a late-blooming but deeply driven artistic practice. A self-taught artist and citizen of the Cherokee Nation, Smith began painting at age 40 and has since created more than 200 portraits, many now held in private collections. Rooted in admiration for her subjects, her work emphasizes emotional connection and recognition over formal training, resulting in direct, heartfelt depictions. The exhibition speaks to the persistence of creative impulse and the possibility of returning to long-held aspirations, offering a compelling narrative of rediscovery and purpose.
