On a recent trip to Moab, I found gallerist Brian Parkin, a British native and soon-to-be American citizen who came to Utah via San Francisco, at the Grand County Library running a slide show/art talk/review with friends and artists of the Moab Abstracts 2007. This annual show, now […]
Tucked away at 390 East 1700 South, Alchemy Coffee is host to good brew, a comfortable, antique atmosphere, and local art. With exposed brick walls, eclectic, second-hand furniture, and an array of delectable beverages and snack items, Alchemy is a little gem just off the beaten path. For owners […]
Salt Lake City artist John Bell will exhibit works from four separate bodies of work at the Patrick Moore Gallery, March 7th through March 31 in an exhibit entitled Building Icons. Mr. Bell further distinguishes himself as the thinking man’s abstract expressionist as he continues to develop his hallmark style […]
In February, Salt Lake witnessed the inauguration of a new monthly film series, OUT/EX, presented by The Pickle Company’s Artists-in-Residence, Loaf-i Productions, in collaboration with Lost Media Archive. Hosted by Nobrow Coffee (in the former Kayo Gallery space) on the third Saturday of every month, OUT/EX will alternate each […]
Provo’s Gallery OneTen, a community gallery celebrating its one year anniversary this month, has spent the past year learning what it takes to create a non-profit art space. Gallery OneTen emerged a year ago, but its genesis stems back five years. That is when Raquel Smith Callis and […]
Places, a space-breaking exhibit by local artist Anne Watson, has been startling drivers and strollers along Salt Lake City’s 17th south for the past month. Watson has birthed a new exhibition space by using the glass-encased alcove’ on the north side of Westminster Colleges Emma Eccles Jones Conservatory […]
Bill Viola, this year’s Tanner lecturer on human values, is the best known and most critically admired video artist. He has the kind of all-but-exclusive prominence held by Nam June Paik in closed-circuit TV and Robert Smithson in earthworks, that Dale Chihuly has in glass or, for that […]
Later this month, Salt Lake City’s The Pickle Company will host a week of events with internationally known Latino artists. Rites of Democracy, held March 17th through the 21st, will feature the U.S./Mexican Performance Art Troupe La Pocha Nostra, which includes Guillermo Gómez-Peña, Roberto Sifuentes, and Violeta Luna. by Bren Jackson William Post’s simple, small platinum prints, sixty of which are now on display at the Brigham Young University Museum of Art, do not shout for attention. Rather, it is the images’ unassuming presence that intrigues and draws the viewer in. Primarily landscapes, Post’s images emphasize the solitude […]
It is often easy (yet dangerous) to pigeonhole artists. Amy Caron, winner of the Utah Arts Council’s 2007 Fellowship Award, is an artist who defies easy categorization. She’s a bit of a shape-shifter that pursues a variety of disciplines all linked to the physicality of her early years. With […]
A few years ago, Ben Steele and his wife, Melanie, left Salt Lake City for the relative isolation of Helper, Utah. One of the benefits of living in such a small town is inexpensive studio space. What is now Ben’s studio space has served just about every purpose […]

The gallery’s February showing features artist views of Salt Lake City by Bevan Chipman, Kindra Fehr, Paul Heath, Cara Koolmes and David Marti. We asked gallery […]
If you aren’t familiar with the brilliant colors and dazzling contrasts in Royden Card’s art, you are missing a very unique artistic expression of southern Utah landscapes. Card, a native of Canada, earned a BFA in painting (1976) and an MFA in painting and sculpture with a minor […]
In “Criticism in the Moment” (January edition), Geoff Wichert provides one critical perspective on the state of today’s art criticism. The essay is thought-provoking, and I rather enjoy Wichert’s prose. However, though his focus is LACMA’s exhibition Magritte and Contemporary Art: The Treachery of Images (through March 4, […]
After a four month hiatus, the much missed Kayo gallery is returning to Broadway—just a block and a half from its former location (now Nobrow coffee). At 177 East Broadway, a few doors down from Michael Berry Gallery, the new Kayo will share the ground floor with Frosty […]

Utah County may not immediately come to mind when looking for great art in this state, but I consistently find art in the area that satisfies. With two major educational institutions, a spattering of galleries, and three distinctly different Art Museums, a smorgasbord of art work is […]
Over the holidays I visited family in the Bay area and while there had the chance to visit the retrospective of Modernist sculptor Ruth Asawa. I was unfamiliar with Asawa before visiting the de Young, but was so impressed with her marvelous sculptures encountered there that I quickly developed […]
