A graduate of the University of Utah, Ann Poore is a freelance writer and editor who spent most of her career at The Salt Lake Tribune. She was the 2018 recipient of the Salt Lake City Mayor's Artist Award in the Literary Arts.
For February we’re asking Utah artists about a specific piece of art or artist, living or not, local or global, that has sparked their curiosity or influenced their work. We’ll be running some of their responses throughout the month. Following a successful 30-year career in the corporate world, […]
In more than two decades as an artist, naturalist and author, Carel Pieter Brest van Kempen’s work has been shown locally, nationally and internationally. With the sole goal of deepening awareness of the natural world and how it functions, the artist tells us he was “a fairly late […]
For February we’re asking Utah artists about a specific piece of art or artist, living or not, local or global, that has sparked their curiosity or influenced their work. We’ll be running some of their responses throughout the month. The question of “Who Do You Love?” takes on […]
Just can’t think of anyone who doesn’t admire Martha Klein: her textiles, her paintings, her spot-on Netflix movie recommendations. At the start of 2016, she is concentrating on “imagery built from line- and mark-making.” This, she says, “is an activity or theme I’ve played with in the past […]
Jerry Hardesty tells us he loves a challenge, and last November he set himself a big one: 75 Paintings in 75 Days for 75.” What’s more, he pulled it off. (Not only that, but sold a whole bunch of 8” x 8” works, in the process!) Hardesty started […]
A number of Utah artists are delighted with Andrew Ehninger for recently curating, as an Adobe team member, entries to the “Utah Artists & Adobe” show that opened Jan. 15 in Lehi. Born and raised in Salt Lake City and now living in Finlandia, Utah, the artist graduated […]
Jeffrey Hale is a dedicated family man. His charming young son and daughter can be found at his second-floor Artspace studio nearly as often as his models. And in 2016, he and his wife are expecting another child. That is, of course, a very big deal. “My work,” […]
Rob Adamson, a professor of art at Salt Lake Community College, began painting nocturne cityscapes of New York City, Salt Lake City and elsewhere in 1997 when he discovered the work of the late, well-known San Francisco painter James Jeffrey Stagg. He painted both day and night scenes, […]
Hadley Anne Rampton works at Phillips Gallery. The question is: WHEN, exactly, does she do that? I mean, her lovely watercolors and sketches hail from Slovenia, Santiago, Santa Margherita, Kosovo, Macedonia, Armenia, Budapest . . . she is everywhere on the planet. And she is collected everywhere, it […]
Alexander Hraefn Morris has a thing for ravens – they are a sort of totem, a recurrent, though abstracted figure in many of his paintings. It’s not surprising, then, that “Hraefn” translates to “raven” from the Old English and that Yorkshire, England, is where Morris recently moved and […]
He’d rather show his work at Smith’s grocery store on the Avenues – galleries don’t agree much with Frank Anthony Smith anymore. But you can see his latest drawing, “The Big Tiny,” in a show opening January 16 in The Gallery at Library Square. He told me last […]
It took a lot of moxie to even consider turning AJ’s Kwik Mart into a decent art gallery, but Terence K. Stephens has done just that – even creating a “nice urban lofty kind of thing,” as he describes his elegant upstairs quarters, to reside in with his […]
To start out 2016 we checked in with some Utah artists to see what they are up to in the New Year. We’ll be running these short features throughout the month. When you think “Connie Borup” you think “nature” and often “trees,” though that theme has morphed in […]
In August, Southwest Art named Tyler Swain one of “21 Under 31” artists to watch in 2015 (he’s all of 26 as of Dec. 31). He told them he’s been playing drums since he was 10 and “thought that being a professional musician would be pretty awesome.” He […]
In a recent article, The Salt Lake Tribune said Mormon mysteries have become a hot new genre, with Mette Ivie Harrison’s 2014 national bestseller The Bishop’s Wife leading the pack. Her second in the Linda Wallheim series, “set in Mormon Utah,“ however, offers little mystery and a lot […]
A massive and meaningful mural created and painted by University of Utah Professor V. Kim Martinez and 11 of her art students was unveiled Dec. 11 at Esperanza Elementary in West Valley City. The 1,500-square-foot work, titled “Lenguaje de Esperanza” or “Language of Hope,” incorporates figures from diverse […]
Been there, done that. Many of us have, I’m sure. “I don’t know the title or the author but I can kinda tell you what the cover looks like. Can you find it for me?” “Well, why can’t you call Barnes and Noble to see if they […]
In PYGmalion Theatre’s excellent Buyer & Cellar, you have Barbra Streisand as herself; a quick cameo by her husband, James Brolin (in search of frozen yogurt with sprinkles); her down-on-his-luck employee, Alex More (recently fired as Disneyland’s Mayor of Toontown for telling a child where to put […]
Commissioned to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the 2016 formation of the National Park Service, the book is a joy to peruse. At a whopping 288 pages, this coffee-table-size tome brings the Grand Teton Range and Jackson Hole area to life in two dimensions. From “Trappers and Traders” to more contemporary works (by Poor Yorick’s Brad Slaugh, for one) it includes more than 375 paintings, drawings and photographs of the Tetons landscape and its wildlife covering over 200 years.
