Julie Nester Gallery presents Circular Garden, an exhibition featuring botanical paintings by Carol O’Malia alongside abstract pointillist works by AJ Oishi. Together, the artists explore themes of nature, color, growth, and transformation through distinct yet complementary visual languages.
In a new series of paintings, O’Malia revisits the floral still-life tradition of Dutch Golden Age painter Rachel Ruysch. Drawing inspiration from Ruysch’s intricate arrangements and meticulous observation, O’Malia reinterprets botanical subjects through luminous natural settings and subtle abstract interventions, creating works that bridge historical and contemporary approaches to painting.
Oishi’s meditative abstractions are built from thousands of individually applied dots and carefully balanced complementary colors. Repeating circular forms serve as symbols of individuality, personal growth, and the ongoing pursuit of mindfulness and balance. Her paintings invite sustained looking, rewarding viewers with shifting optical experiences and quiet contemplation.
Together, the exhibition creates a dialogue between observation and abstraction, tradition and reinvention, offering multiple perspectives on the natural world and our relationship to it.
