Photo Essay
Dinosaurland

Utah has a surfeit of natural wonders, which may explain why some spectacular parts of the state go relatively unnoticed. Dinosaur National Monument, near Vernal, is far from any interstate, lacks the national park status that might draw more attention and visitors, and has a name that may fool hikers lacking an interest in paleontology. But as Randy Fullbright's photographs demonstrate, the rugged country at the confluence of the Green and Yampa Rivers is a spectacular celebration of form and color. It's also got lots of dinosaur bones.

Art Events: Uintah County
Art & Inspiration
Celebrating the centennial of Dinosaur National Monument

On Oct. 4, 1915, 80 acres of fossil-rich land in northeast Utah were set aside as Dinosaur National Monument, which was expanded 23 years later to cover over 210,000 acres along the Utah-Colorado border. For the last six months, the Monument has been celebrating its 100-year anniversary with a variety of projects and special events based on monthly themes. During September, the theme is "Art & Inspiration."

An exhibit of photography and painting at the Uintah County Heritage Museum in Vernal, coordinated by photographer Randy Fullbright, runs until Oct. 5. Hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Friday and 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Saturday. Fullbright, whose photographs grace this page, also is featured at 7 p.m. on Sept. 22 at the Uintah County Library in Vernal with his documentary “Dinosaur Through the Lens.”

“Postcards from the Past National Fossil Day Art Contest” is open to all, with submission guidelines and examples of past winners at: www.nature.nps.gov/geology/nationalfossilday.

Sept. 13 and Sept. 20, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. there is a Rock Art Talk and Tour at Echo Park Campground. Call the Canyon Visitor Center for details and road conditions.

On Sept. 16 at 4 p.m. in the Quarry Exhibit Hall, Utah Opera will give a half-hour performance.

A Scenery Scavenger Hunt InstaMeet is Sept. 19 starting at 1 p.m. at Utah Field House of Natural History in Vernal and picking up again at 2:30 p.m. at Quarry Visitor Center. After reviewing Ernest Untermann paintings at the Field House, you will try to locate and photograph scenes in the Monument that match the paintings. Best photos will be posted online.

Sept. 26, from 10 a.m. – noon at the Quarry Exhibit Hall and 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. at the Split Mountain Boat Ramp, painting demonstrations will be given by A.D. Shaw and other local artists. Bring your art supplies and join in. The $10 per vehicle entry fee will be waived all day for Public Lands Day.

The actual 100th anniversary Dinosaur Centennial Weekend is Oct. 2-4.
