Alexander Selytin, “Legacy,” oil on canvas
The 38th Annual Sears Invitational Art Show & Sale, hosted at the Sears Art Museum in the Eccles Fine Arts Center at Utah Tech University, has named its top award recipients. This year’s showcase features over 200 artists from Utah and the Western United States, with a variety of works spanning traditional and contemporary styles.
Best in Show was awarded to “Legacy” by Alexander Selytin, a striking oil painting that continues the artist’s exploration of Native American culture. Originally from Russia, Selytin trained at the prestigious Academy of Fine Arts before moving to the United States, where he became known for his highly detailed depictions of Indigenous artifacts and traditions. He now lives in Provo, Utah and his work can be found in numerous collections, including the Springville Museum of Art.

Larry Conrad Winborg, “In Your Face,” oil on board
The Purchase Prize Winner went to “Fully Finished Flowering” by Salt Lake City artist Tyler Huntzinger. Huntzinger, known for his innovative use of materials, combines oil paint with asphalt, creating layered, dreamlike textures. His background in painting, printmaking, and ceramics from the University of Utah informs his experimental approach, resulting in compositions that feel both timeless and contemporary.
The Curator’s Choice Award was given to “In Your Face” by Larry Conrad Winborg, a dynamic oil painting that showcases his mastery of motion and Western themes. Winborg, whose career includes illustrations for Sports Illustrated and Reader’s Digest, is widely respected for his ability to capture energy and emotion on canvas. His works are held in private and corporate collections across the country.
The Sears Invitational remains open through March 29, 2025, with special exhibition hours Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Visitors can also participate in selecting the Viewer’s Choice Award, with ballots available at the museum’s front desk.
Admission is free, making this an excellent opportunity to explore some of the finest artistic talent in the region.
