Ben Hammond’s “The Five Wise Virgins” Installed on Temple Square

A wide-angle view of The Five Wise Virgins statue captures three of the figures in profile, each holding lamps and facing outward with serene, purposeful expressions. The bronze forms are dramatically lit against a vivid blue sky dotted with clouds, with urban structures and cherry blossoms surrounding the monument.

Whether you came as a visitor to the April 2025 general conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or were on your way to the State Capitol to add your voice to one of the recent protests, if you passed through Temple Square in downtown Salt Lake City, you had the chance to see the recently unveiled “The Five Wise Virgins.” The bronze sculpture by artist Ben Hammond has been installed between the Relief Society Building and the Salt Lake Temple. It depicts five women from Jesus of Nazareth’s parable in Matthew 25, holding lamps aloft as they move toward the temple—symbolizing readiness, faith, and the enduring spiritual labor of women, the artist says.

A side angle of the Five Wise Virgins statue shows two women with long, wavy hair gazing upward, their arms extended as they present their burning oil lamps. The flames, tinted with green and gold, glow against the bronze. A clear blue sky serves as a backdrop, heightening the sculpture's spiritual symbolism.
