Up & Upcoming to the South

Springville Museum of Art UP: Face-Off: Portraits by Casey Childs.|1| AND: Beyond Memory: The Daydreams of Corinne Geersten. A sometimes humorous, always insightful collection of pictures assembled digitally from photos of ancestors creating surreal and quirky visual narratives about psychological predicaments. Watch for odd juxtapositions, non sequiturs, and the possible element of surprise.|2|

Woodbury Art Museum UP: The Hal Wing Photography Collection, from the Museum's permanent collection.

Brigham Young University Museum of Art UP: Showcasing ralli quilts from the exceptional contemporary textile collection of Patricia Ormsby Stoddard, Fabric of Belonging explores how historical traditions contribute to the deep sense of belonging that ralli quilts provide for people living in the areas of Sindh, Pakistan and West India. For their owners, ralli quilts are a personal form of identification that connects them with their region and their heritage.|3| AND: The major traveling exhibition CUT! Costume and the Cinema takes an in-depth look at the art of making costumes that set the scene, establish character and provide authenticity in period films. Films represented in the exhibition depict five centuries of history, drama, comedy, fantasy and adventure through costumes worn by such famous film stars as Johnny Depp, Keira Knightley, Ralph Fiennes, Daniel Craig, Kate Winslet, Sandra Bullock, Uma Thurman, Anjelica Huston and many others. AND: Amar Kanwar, A Season Outside reveals the tension surrounding the militarized border between India and Pakistan. The work is an abstract digital video projection of the sunset ritual of closing the gate on the border at Wagah-Atari juxtaposed with images of enforced division, theatrical military posturing, and real violence in the region.|4| AND: Loving Devotion: Visions of Vishnu. Focusing on images of Vishnu and Krishna that span centuries of history, the exhibition explores how bhakti (the practice of fervent, impassioned devotion to deity) influences the lives and worship of Hindu people and reveals the depth and intimacy of their relationship towards the divine (see our review page 6). AND: Kim Schoenstadt, Block Plan Series: Provo, is a culmination of community effort and installation, that features three-dimensional wall drawings inspired by the architecture and identity of Provo, Utah (see our review page 7).

Granary Art Center UP:
Going This Way is an exhibition of six contemporary artists—Davis Baddley,|5| Mark Biddle, Erin Coleman-Cruz, Kim Gordon, Caroline Lavoie, and Joseph Ostraff—whose work looks at the traditions and implications of American vacation travel, its ties with leisure and risk, and its shaping of American identity. Whether we speed through vast landscapes in the comfort of an air-conditioned car or meticulously document every step of our travels with a camera phone, these artists invite us to consider not where we go, but how we go. AND: By Car, By Plane, By Boat, By Train... Modern man has always been fascinated by mechanized modes of transportation. From the invention of the wheel to the first space flight, the compulsion to travel further, higher, faster, deeper has resulted in a multitude of mechanized vehicles and vessels. This exhibition explores the obsession to motate, and showcases assemblage contraptions which reinterpret modes of transportation on land, in the air, and at sea. The exhibition includes both unique visions of 2D collage and 3D assemblage work.|6|
