\nSitting down at a homey caf\u00e9 at 9th and 9th, my date and I did what any pair on a low-stakes Thursday night outing might do: we tucked ourselves into a small table, exchanged a grin over flickering candlelight, and started scanning the menu. Should we split something? Go for something comfortable? Or try something new? The categories looked promising\u2014flights, entr\u00e9es, desserts\u2014but the descriptions felt\u2026unusual: “Dry Clay Souffl\u00e9,” “Charcoal Sampler,” “Watercolor Medley.”<\/h4>\n

Art Caf\u00e9, which opened in November in this hip Salt Lake City\u2019s neighborhood, is not your usual caf\u00e9, with coffee, pastries, and specialty dishes. Rather, it offers a mirrored caf\u00e9 experience, swapping food for art and crafts. Just like at a regular caf\u00e9, everyone gets to choose their own \u201centr\u00e9e,\u201d with a spread of different art mediums laid out across the table. It has already drawn in people craving both creativity and the shared human act of making art.<\/h4>\n
