The cover story for this month’s edition of Foreign Policy magazine features 13 “out-of-the-box” ideas to save the world economy from some of the smartest people they know. Number 2, from economist Diane Coyle, is to hire everybody. In the long-run she’d like that the private sector be responsible for full-employment, but in the short term, and as a remedy for overcoming the current crises, she believes we should look back to the WPA and similar government programs.<\/p>\n

Reading the article might serve as a good primer for a current exhibit of Depression era prints at the UMFA. The exhibition includes 60 woodcuts, serigraphs, lithographs and etchings from the private collection of Marcia and John Price. Including works by Thomas Hart Benson, Grant Wood and (a young) Jackson Pollock. the collection is a reminder of a former time when the government sought to achieve full employment.<\/p>\n
