10\/23 DESERET NEWS: New Provo gallery rises \u2018from the ashes\u2019 of Writ & Vision to give voice to a variety of LDS, other artists<\/strong><\/p>\n

For about a decade, the cramped, lively quarters of\u00a0Provo\u2019s Writ & Vision\u00a0operated as a kind of unofficial headquarters for the Mormon intelligentsia \u2014 a place where, within the shadow of church-owned Brigham Young University,\u00a0the curious could gather to safely explore ideas\u00a0one didn\u2019t often find in Latter-day Saint Sunday school manuals.<\/p>\n

That all came to an abrupt end earlier this year.<\/p>\n

Or, that would have been the end \u2014 if not for the store\u2019s second-in-command and shop inheritor, Esther Candari. Under her leadership and in collaboration with the\u00a0nonprofit Faith Matters, a new community hub,\u00a0The Compass, has emerged like, as Latter-day Saint sculptor and painter\u00a0J. Kirk Richards\u00a0put it, \u201ca phoenix rising from the ashes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nThousands of travelers walked through Salt Lake City International Airport on Tuesday, many unaware they were among the first to step inside the third completed phase of the airport\u2019s development program.<\/p>\n

No longer do travelers need to break a sweat getting from the terminal to Concourse B. The days of marathon sprinting to make your flight are over.<\/p>\n

The airport\u2019s newest installation is a tunnel that \u201cfinally get(s) to cut that walk in half, and that\u2019s something that we can all cheer about,\u201d said Steve Sisneros, the vice president of airport affairs for Southwest Airlines.<\/p>\n

10\/20 DESERET NEWS: Utah sculptor spends his own final years depicting the \u2018culmination of Christ\u2019s life\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

One of America\u2019s most iconic sculptors of Western themes, Edward J. Fraughton, died this summer at his Utah home after spending over six decades creating art that dots the country\u2019s landscape \u2014 from the Mormon Battalion Monument\u00a0<\/i>in San Diego, California, to The Ancient Ones\u00a0<\/i>at the entrance to Mesa Verde National Park to The Cadet\u00a0<\/i>for Randolph-Macon Academy in Front Royal, Virginia.<\/p>\n

Near the end of his life, Fraughton became passionate about one last artistic witness. For two years, he worked full time designing a depiction of what he believed to be \u201cthe most important day in all Christianity.\u201d<\/p>\n

10\/18 DESERET NEWS: Tree of Life sculpture garden opens at Thanksgiving Point with Book of Mormon and Bible scenes

Visitors to a new sculpture garden in Utah walk up a winding hillside pathway through 130 bronze sculptures and into the pages of the Book of Mormon and Bible, where they will find five depictions of Jesus Christ, the empty tomb, the iron rod and a great and spacious building.<\/p>\n

At the top of the hill, Christ stands in front of the white trunk, branches and leaves of a bronze Tree of Life, beckoning all to come to him to find love and peace.<\/p>\n

\u201cI put Christ by the Tree of Life so we don\u2019t have to wonder and try to figure out what the symbolism is of the Tree of Life,\u201d sculptor Angela Johnson said. \u201cIt\u2019s the love of God manifested in Christ. I just don\u2019t want to dodge the topic anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n

10\/16 SLTRIB: Daybreak to get new theater, arts center near Salt Lake Bees ballpark<\/strong><\/p>\n

A new regional arts center is planned for South Jordan\u2019s Daybreak area, blocks from the new Salt Lake Bees ballpark.<\/p>\n

Currently in its design phase, the center will include an 800-seat proscenium theater meant to serve small and medium-sized performing arts organizations, Salt Lake County announced this week. It will also feature a visual arts gallery and classroom space.<\/p>\n

The county on Tuesday announced a partnership with the Miller foundation to construct the arts venue, which will be called the Larry H. & Gail Miller Family Arts Center. It\u2019s being funded in part by a $25 million gift from the Larry H. & Gail Miller Family Foundation.<\/p>\n
