Camilla Taylor’s exhibit at Saltgrass (see our post here) and Rebecca Campbell’s presence in the Salt Lake Art Center’s Doublespeak exhibit were cited as two of the subjects we could cover.

With our expanded coverage of the performing arts we could have added to that list Home Made, the evening-length contemporary dance piece by tEEth, which features choreographer Angelle Hebert and composer Phillip Kraft, both of whom called Utah home at one time.

Hebert is a Louisiana native, but studied dance at the University of Utah. Kraft is from Salt Lake, but relocated to Portland a decade ago. They are the artistic directors of tEEth, a Portland-based performance group that integrates contemporary dance, new media, original sound, costumes and sculpture.

Their critically-acclaimed Home Made, which runs approximately 60 minutes, “examines the struggles of intimate negotiation, the irrationality of dependence, and the peculiar awkwardness of human beauty and exchange.” The work is performed by a male and female duo (Noel Plemmons and Keely McIntyre), accompanied by male and female live vocalists (Luke Matter and Cali Ricks). Live video feeds push the audience closer to the performers, disorienting a sense of scale and giving access to multiple perspectives. Projected images of the details of human flesh expose a raw, vulnerable intimacy. Hebert’s distinctive choreography features interlocked limbs, pushing gestural dance to its limits. As clothes are stripped away, the protective skins of social politeness are shed, revealing the bones of violence, connection and loss. Playful movement shades into manipulation and exploration becomes aggression as the dancers explore a delicate balance between tenderness and hostility.

Kraft’s original compositions combine computer-generated sound with two onstage vocalists. Blending lush piano and wordless song, the score is both hypnotic and lyrical. Created in tandem, choreography and music are interwoven through both melodic and conceptual mirroring. Minimalist grey costumes by Britta Hellquist compliment the stark landscape. Lighting design by Alex Gagne-Hawes develops a striking balance of warm and soft tones, defining shifts of energy, focus, and intention.

*This performance contains full frontal male and female nudity.

Dance Theatre Coalition presents tEETH at the Rose Wagner Black Box October 20, 21, 22

Performances:

Thursday Oct. 20, 2011 @ 8:00 PM

Friday, Oct. 21, 2011 @ 8:00 PM

Saturday, Oct. 22, 2011 @ 8:00 PM

Location:

Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center

Leona Wagner Black Box Theater

138 W.
