The artwork consists of a series of images transferred onto a resin material and made to look like crumpled pieces of paper or delicate pieces of glass work. Each piece varies in size and clarity, evoking the ephemerality and inconsistency of human memory. The title suggests a state of confusion, forgetfulness, or a lack of mental clarity, mirroring the artist’s concern with remembering and forgetting. The images themselves are difficult to discern, which may symbolize the struggle to recall or the process of memories fading away. This blurred imagery is consistent with Vasquez’s interest in the hidden, the enigmatic, and the non-discernible. The shadows cast by the resin pieces contribute to the work’s ethereal quality and indicate the passage of time. This shadow play also aligns with the concept of things being seen and unseen, as the shadows may reveal or conceal parts of the images, much like the selective nature of memory.

Vasquez is a Chilean artist who studied at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso and now resides in Provo, Utah.

READ MORE ABOUT THE ARTIST AND VIEW MORE OF HIS WORK

Artists of Utah’s 35×35, Finch Lane Gallery, Salt Lake City, through Feb. 23

Abel Vasquez’s “Brain Fog” is an evocative installation that materializes the complex interplay of memory, perception, and the transience of the physical form.
