Aimee Odum, \u201cGetting to Know You,\u201d 2023, ceramics, 20.25 x 16 x 3.25 in.<\/p><\/div>\n

Trained at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, Aimee Odum works with one of the oldest art mediums, ceramics, and one of the newest, video, often combining the two as installations or assemblages “to create a space where future or parallel universes can be imagined.” Her ceramic sculptures are hand-built, with molds formed of paper to create an organic shape. These are influenced by geological structures, botanical life, and Jane Bennett’s concept that inanimate objects have more of a life than we think.<\/p>\n

What exactly is the form we see in “Getting to Know You”? Some furry mammal, its face obscured by spaghetti-like strands of hair? Or a sea creature we might find on a coral reef, enlarged for the gallery wall? Ultimately, it is dirt, combined with fire and pigment. But, still, it feels like something we might want to get to know.<\/p>\n
