{"id":69873,"date":"2023-10-29T10:43:37","date_gmt":"2023-10-29T16:43:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/?p=69873"},"modified":"2023-10-31T13:58:39","modified_gmt":"2023-10-31T19:58:39","slug":"slc-public-art-wins-1-million-fanny-blauer-wins-social-justice-award-greg-olsen-takes-a-turn-in-his-career","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/slc-public-art-wins-1-million-fanny-blauer-wins-social-justice-award-greg-olsen-takes-a-turn-in-his-career\/","title":{"rendered":"SLC Public Art Wins $1 million, Fanny Blauer Wins Social Justice Award, Greg Olsen Takes a Turn in His Career"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/fannyblauer.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-69875\" src=\"https:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/fannyblauer.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"205\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>10\/21 Fanny Guadalupe Blauer receives the Ruby <span class=\"s1\">Chac\u00f3n Social Justice Arts Award<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">At the opening of t<a href=\"https:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/index.php\/micas-move-to-the-gateway-doesnt-change-their-mission-to-serve-utahs-borderland-communities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">heir new space in the Gateway<\/a>, Mestizo Institute of Culture &amp; Arts (MICA) presented the Ruby Chac\u00f3n Social Justice Arts Award to Fanny Guadalupe Blauer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">Originally from Mexico City, <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Blauer <\/span><span class=\"s2\">holds a degree in certified public accounting from the Instituto Politecnico Nacional and a Certificate in Anthropology of Art from the Center for Research and Advanced Studies of Social Anthropology (CIESAS).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Since 2019 she has been the executive director of<\/span><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.artesmexut.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Arts de M\u00e9xico en Utah<\/a>, where, among other accomplishments, she has instituted the artist in residency program at The Leonardo. <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Blauer has previously worked as a community liaison, translator, and interpreter at the Natural History Museum of Utah and is currently active in diversity and inclusion committees for organizations like The Nature Conservancy of Utah.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s2\">In 2018, MICA launched the\u00a0Ruby Chac\u00f3n Social Justice Arts Award\u00a0in 2018. The award recognizes \u201cSalt Lake Valley residents who are advancing justice and equity in our communities through the arts.\u201d It is named after MICA co-founder Ruby Chac\u00f3n, a Xicana artist, educator, activist, and community leader whose murals and other artwork can be seen across the valley.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/spiraljettywaterlevel.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-13661\" src=\"https:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/spiraljettywaterlevel-300x115.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"115\" srcset=\"https:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/spiraljettywaterlevel-300x115.jpg 300w, https:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/spiraljettywaterlevel-1024x395.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/spiraljettywaterlevel-500x192.jpg 500w, https:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/spiraljettywaterlevel.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>10\/19 Salt Lake City Wins $1 million Dollar Grant for Public Art Addressing the Great Salt Lake\u2019s Environmental Crisis<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Salt Lake City was among the eight cities Bloomberg Philanthropies recently announced as winners of its third Public Art Challenge, each set to receive grants of up to $1 million for temporary public art projects that tackle urgent civic issues. In addition to the grants, each city will benefit from technical support provided by Bloomberg Philanthropies over the next two years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">According to a press release from The Salt Lake City Arts Council, \u201cWake: the Great Salt Lake\u201d aims to \u201caddress the shrinking of the Great Salt Lake caused by humans and climate change by curating and installing several temporary public artworks by diverse local, regional, and internationally recognized artists that speak to this environmental crisis.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cPublic art holds a unique power of activating change and optimism in our communities,\u201d Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall said. \u201cThe opportunity for local artists and creators to harness their talents to encourage stewardship of the Great Salt Lake \u2014 the city\u2019s namesake and one of the most vital ecosystems in our region \u2014 is absolutely phenomenal.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The project aims to bring nationally renowned artists to Salt Lake City with the purpose of educating and inspiring both residents and visitors to explore potential solutions and take action at both local and national levels. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Felicia Baca, the Executive Director, remarked, &#8220;This marks the largest grant ever received by our Salt Lake City Arts Council. Our project, &#8216;Wake: the Great Salt Lake,&#8217; encompasses multiple meanings of the word &#8216;wake.&#8217; It serves as a moment for reflecting on loss, signifies the act of regaining consciousness after rest, and evokes the turbulence experienced when moving through water. Through diverse forms of artistic expression, this initiative will create waves of awareness throughout our community.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">The Arts Council team has initiated partnerships within City departments, local nonprofits, and the artistic community, actively pursuing collaborations with local tribal communities, scientists, and a diverse range of community members. Over the next two years, public and private partners will unite to achieve this substantial and historically significant investment in public art dedicated to the Great Salt Lake.<\/p>\n<p>Since its inception in 2014 by former New York City mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, <\/span><span class=\"s1\">The Bloomberg Philanthropies Public Art Challenge has generated over $100 million in economic benefits for participating cities and has spurred action across a spectrum of civic issues.
