\"\"<\/a>9\/29 SLTRIB:\u00a0From a sphinx of Joseph Smith to the Ninth and Ninth whale, these landmarks help keep Utah weird.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Utahns like to tell the newcomers to check out the sites \u2014 and there are plenty of familiar landmarks, such as Temple Square, the This Is the Place monument, Delicate Arch and Zion National Park.<\/p>\n

But there are some landmarks that defy description, and sometimes belief. They are locations you\u2019re kind of surprised exist anywhere \u2014 let alone in Utah.<\/p>\n

Here are seven one-of-a-kind Utah landmarks, listed roughly in order of creation:<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>9\/15 Ernesto Balderas becomes interim director of Utah Cultural Alliance<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Balderas was hired as the organization\u2019s Communications Director in 2020 and more recently served in the Deputy Director role. Under his leadership, UCA will continue its work to support and represent the arts and cultural community in Utah and to measurably expand investment in the sector. A skilled dance performer, Ernesto graduated from Southern Utah University (SUU) Master of Fine Arts in Arts Administration in 2017. During his undergraduate and graduate work at SUU, Ernesto worked for and with many nonprofit organizations including at Southern Utah University, with TURN Community Services, at Southern Utah Museum of Art, and for the last three years at
\nUtah Cultural Alliance.<\/p>\n

In his new role at the helm of UCA, Ernesto plans to expand the community of artists, performers, museums and cultural institutions that UCA supports and showcase the evidence of the sector\u2019s positive impact on the State\u2019s economics and quality of life. \u201cI am grateful for the opportunity to serve Utah as Interim Director of the Utah Cultural Alliance,\u201d Ernesto said. \u201cUCA is the industry organization for the cultural sector, which significantly contributes to Utah\u2019s employment, tourism spending, and overall GDP. A thriving arts & cultural sector benefits Utahns and visitors alike.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thank you to all of the artists who took part in all aspects of this juried exhibition. The 2023 Statewide Annual, on display through September 16 at the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art, is composed of 28 artworks of mixed media or works on paper selected from nearly 400 artists\u2019 submissions received from across the state. We were honored to have Julio C\u00e9sar Morales of Arizona and Pat Hickman of New York as this year\u2019s jurors, as they brought a vast array of knowledge to the selection process regarding material use, concept, craft, experimentation, and the art world at large.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
