<\/a>8\/21 DESERET NEWS: Art exhibit brings life in southern Mexico\u2019s highlands to Orem<\/strong><\/p>\nA pair of chicken feet, fingers weaving wool, a spindle lying in the dirt, a handful of tortillas cooking on a comal.<\/p>\n
For photographer Maruch Sant\u00edz G\u00f3mez, each of these day-to-day items represents a thread that, together, weave a uniquely intimate portrait of the lives, culture and traditions of her people, the Tzotzil Maya.<\/p>\n
“It’s very similar to the process of weaving textiles. Textiles are complex; photography is complex, even more so when the digital age started,” Sant\u00edz, who is also a weaver and textile designer, said in Spanish. “The process of weaving has been forgotten. Only a few women still practice the natural process. … My interest is to recover ancient knowledge that is lost and forgotten.”<\/p>\n
READ MORE<\/a><\/p>\n When Kate Jarman-Gates moved into the house on Salt Lake City\u2019s west side that now hosts\u00a0Clever Cucumber<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 a free art studio and workshop space \u2014 she found out that someone had left behind some hand-crafted stepping stones.<\/p>\n \u201cA lot of them were actually buried on the property,\u201d said Jarman-Gates, the one-woman show running Clever Cucumber.<\/p>\n Each is a kaleidoscopic mosaic of different colored stones, glass, and sometimes non-traditional craft objects \u2014 such as miniature utensils and beer bottle caps.<\/p>\n READ MORE<\/a><\/p>\n <\/p>\n
\n8\/21 Salt Lake City Arts Council<\/strong> has announced that Amy Childress has joined their team as the Public Art Program Coordinator.
