West Valley is \u201ca culturally diverse, artistic and engaging city,\u201d countered Michael Christensen, who is visual arts manager for the\u00a0Utah Cultural Celebration Center<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 one of the two major arts venues in the city (the other being the\u00a0West Valley Performing Arts Center<\/a>).<\/p>\n

There are 24 to-go boxes aligned neatly into two rows on a white table in Tali Alisa Hafoka\u2019s new\u00a0UMOCA<\/i>\u00a0exhibit,\u00a0Carried Across<\/i>. 24 paintings adorn the wall beside the table: a can of opened Spam, a cupcake with coconut shavings piled high, sardines packed tight into a tin. Each piece represents a hallmark of Pacific Islander cuisine. \u201cI\u2019ve been self-conscious about not being Samoan enough or \u2018cultural\u2019 enough,\u201d Hafoka says. \u201cWhen I make art about that, it\u2019s so easy to own it.\u201d<\/p>\n
