Utah Arts & Museums has announced the 12 recipients of their 2012 Utah Artist Fellowships. The $5,000 unrestricted cash prizes were award to six Utah visual artists and six performing artists.<\/p>\n

Allison Glenn, a New York-based curator and writer, juried the visual arts fellowships. \u201cThrough the jurying process, multiple themes began to emerge that I relied upon as cornerstones, or guideposts, toward my understanding of the key issues, concerns, and areas of interest for this region of the country,\u201d Glenn said.<\/p>\n

The Visual Arts fellows are:
\nAnna Evans (Helper)
\nKatherine Poleviyaoma (Kearns)
\nJorge Rojas (Salt Lake City) (see our Utah’s 15 profile here<\/a>)
\nCarol Sogard (Salt Lake City) (Sogard is part of this month’s Variant of Concern feature<\/a>)
\nFazilat Soukhakian (Bountiful) (see our 15 Bytes profile here<\/a>)
\nKalani Tonga (Midvale).<\/p>\n

Kevin R. Free, a New York-based multidisciplinary artist who works as an actor, writer, director, and producer, was struck by the sense of community he found during the jurying process for the performing arts. When he became interested in one artist he found they had written a recommendation for another artists. “I was most impressed by this, as community is what I have sought to create in New York City, where there seem to be so many of us competing for the same very small piece of the pie,” Free said. “I found myself wanting to see shows at many of the places about which I learned.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Performing Arts Fellowship recipients are:

\nShenelle Salcido (Salt Lake City)
\nCamille Washington (Ogden)
\nMitsu Salmon (Salt Lake City)
\nKelsie Jepsen (Salt Lake City)
