{"id":61452,"date":"2021-09-25T10:26:03","date_gmt":"2021-09-25T16:26:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/?p=61452"},"modified":"2022-01-19T11:10:01","modified_gmt":"2022-01-19T17:10:01","slug":"the-year-was-2002","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/the-year-was-2002\/","title":{"rendered":"The Year Was 2002 &#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Art2002hrz-1.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-61453\" src=\"http:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Art2002hrz-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"324\" height=\"247\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nThe year was 2002, and Utah was host to the Winter Olympics &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>When the Springville Museum of Art was selected as the official venue for an exhibition of Utah art, a group of artists decided to go rogue and stage an exhibit closer to the action and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/index.php\/unofficial-gold-utahart-2002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UtahArt2002<\/a>\u00a0opened in the Norman Building in Salt Lake City.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The spirit of promise was in the air that year and Salt Lake City was to home to a flurry of gallery initiatives in 2002:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the heart of the city, Pam O&#8217;Mara opened\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/index.php\/pam-omaras-vision-brings-together-the-artists-community-of-utah\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Utah Artist Hands<\/a>, a gallery dedicated to Utah artists, including Native American artists and artists from the southwest of the state, rarely seen in Salt Lake City galleries.<\/p>\n<p>Stephen Teuscher opened Fables Fine Art at Exchange Place (Shawn Stradley reviewed their\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/index.php\/outside-looking-in-celebrating-the-human-form\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Celebrating the Human Form exhibit<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/index.php\/outside-looking-in-celebrating-the-human-form\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0<\/a>in July).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/index.php\/the-changing-faces-of-meats-gallery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jim \u201cMeats\u201d Meier,<\/a>\u00a0a local painter and digital artist, transformed the Gladstone Furnishings building on 17th South into an art gallery.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/index.php\/artspace-forum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Artspace Forum<\/a>\u00a0gallery opened up kitty-corner from the construction site of The Gateway project, and was home to some great exhibits that year, including\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/index.php\/layne-meacham-you-like-what-you-know-at-artspace-forum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Layne Mecham<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/index.php\/35-x-35-a-new-generation-of-artists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Artists of Utah&#8217;s inaugural 35&#215;35 exhibition<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/index.php\/trasas-emerging-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">T<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/index.php\/trasas-emerging-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RASA, the Urban Arts collective,<\/a>\u00a0found a home in the Pickle Factory, on the west side of downtown.<\/p>\n<p>Nearby, Brad Slaugh finished his first iteration of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/index.php\/the-court-jester-builds-a-castle-brad-slaugh-and-the-poor-yorick-artist-studios\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Poor Yorick Studios<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/index.php\/david-ericson-gallerys-new-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">David Ericson<\/a>\u00a0moved into a new home, a 19th-century brick house located next to a liquor store. It&#8217;s now his old home \u2014 he recently sold that building and this month opened a show for Brian Kershisnik in his new space.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Of course, Salt Lake City wasn&#8217;t the only place where stuff was happening:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In Bountiful,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/index.php\/lamplight-gallery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lamplight Gallery<\/a>\u00a0celebrated its one-year anniversary.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Bingham began\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/index.php\/paint-utah-its-logans-turn-to-welcome-the-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Paint Utah<\/a>\u00a0in Logan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rosy optimism wasn&#8217;t the only emotion on offer, and we followed a variety of controversies that year:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A huge piece of granite that for years had served as<a href=\"http:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/index.php\/the-rock-is-back-or-is-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/index.php\/the-rock-is-back-or-is-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an informal public art project<\/a>\u00a0for the community at the bottom of Little Cottonwood Canyon was buried by a developer.<\/p>\n<p>Art enthusiasts and art professionals were urging the state legislature to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/index.php\/art-on-the-hill-the-2002-utah-legislature-and-the-visual-arts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reinvest in the state&#8217;s public art program<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/index.php\/art-on-the-hill-the-2002-utah-legislature-and-the-visual-arts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0<\/a>after the percent-for-art was furloughed in 2001.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/index.php\/jamie-clydes-christ-figures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jamie Clyde&#8217;s &#8220;Christ figures<\/a>&#8221;\u00a0stirred controversy when they were shown at Angles Gallery.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Our Artist Profiles celebrated artists from across the state:<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/index.php\/pilar-pobil-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pilar Pobil<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/index.php\/the-life-and-art-of-ruby-chacon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ruby Chacon<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/index.php\/mark-england-redeeming-the-visual-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mark England<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/index.php\/david-delthony-covered-in-dust\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">David Delthony<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/index.php\/joe-venus-man-of-a-thousand-hats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joe Venus<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/index.php\/bevan-chipman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bevan Chipman<\/a><\/p>\n<p>And we reviewed exhibits big (Bob Olpin reviewed the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/index.php\/spring-salon-the-good-stuff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Spring Salon<\/a>\u00a0for us) small ( the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/index.php\/whats-under-your-glass-the-coaster-project\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Coaster Project<\/a>\u00a0at the The Gallery at the Gay and Lesbian Community Center ) and everything in between.
