Twice a year \u2014 generally around the equinoxes \u2014 Poor Yorick Studios<\/a> opens its doors to thousands of Utah art lovers for their open studio event. Located in South Salt Lake, the studio complex comprises four adjacent and connected buildings and is home to dozens of artists working in just about any medium you might think of. But it has been more than two years since Poor Yorick last opened its doors (in September, 2019). The outbreak of the COVID pandemic in March 2020 slammed the door shut on that year’s Spring open house, and subsequent waves of the pandemic have kept the doors closed to the public.<\/p>\n

For our 2021 version of “Best Of,” we decided to slip in to Poor Yorick to see what some of the artists have been up to and for them what has been the best of 2021:<\/p>\n

ELISE ZOLLER<\/b><\/h4>\n

“<\/span>There is nothing more interesting to me than how light bounces across the surfaces of a front porch,” says Elise Zoller. “I love front porches. Reflected light might be the whole reason I do this,” she says of her practice of painting architectural landscapes en plein air<\/em>. A graduate of Princeton (in architecture), Zoller has studied drawing and painting at the Academy of Realist Art in Boston and Masters Academy in Springville, Utah. In the warmer moths, Zoller works primarily in northern Utah and heads south, to St. George and points beyond, in the winter.<\/h4>\n

“Despite all the turmoil in the world, this has been a good year for me. I\u2019ve continued working in small towns throughout Utah, painting architectural landscapes. I\u2019ve spent a good deal of time in Salt Lake City proper, Escalante, Vernal, and Ogden. Last week, I even got to Route 66 in Arizona and painted in the towns of Kingman and Flagstaff. Kingman was a real discovery.\u00a0 <\/span>There are many untouched, elegant, older buildings in the historic downtown and the train watching is unparalleled.\u00a0 <\/span>I googled it: More than 100 trains a day pass though the town. They form a soundtrack in the background. The highlight might have been standing on the corner in Winslow, Arizona. Just saying.<\/h4>\n

“The coolest place I spent time in was Tatton Baird, the hattery in Springville, Utah. Chandler allowed me to spend some time painting inside his phenomenal store that sells everything from cowboy hats to bowlers.”<\/h4>\n
