But &#8220;Self Portrait with Nightfall,&#8221; the poem from which they are taken, appeared in her seventh collection of poetry, <em>Wayward<\/em>, published in 2019. Coles calls it &#8220;one of those poems that is written in one world and manages to pass into the next.&#8221;<\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">It was published in\u00a0<i class=\"yiv4463504904\">Wayward<\/i>, which I now think of as a very innocent (though self-awaredly so) book, in 2019, and appeared on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.versedaily.org\/2019\/selfportraitwithnightfall.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Verse Daily web site<\/a> in December. \u00a0Somehow, I missed it there; I think I was traveling, and was only made aware of it there in early April, after the pandemic had us firmly in its grip. I posted it on Facebook, of course, and the response was kind of overwhelming. People were definitely reading it as speaking to this moment as to their own losses, absences, precariousnesses. This is why I chose it: it is very present to me.<\/h4>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('audio');<\/script><![endif]-->\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-53688-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"http:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Self-Portrait-with-Nightfall-by-Katharine-Coles.m4a?_=1\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Self-Portrait-with-Nightfall-by-Katharine-Coles.m4a\">http:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Self-Portrait-with-Nightfall-by-Katharine-Coles.m4a<\/a><\/audio>\n<h4>Coles&#8217; memoir\u00a0<i class=\"yiv4463504904\">Look Both\u00a0<\/i>Ways was a finalist for the 15 Bytes Book Award in Creative Nonfiction last year. She was the 2018-19 Poet-in-Residence at the Natural History Museum of Utah and the SLC Public Library for the Poets House FIELD WORK program. In 2010, she traveled to Antarctica to write poems under the auspices of the National Science Foundation\u2019s Antarctic Artists and Writers Program.\u00a0 She has also received awards from the NEA, the NEH, and the Guggenheim Foundation. Her\u00a0<i class=\"yiv4463504904\">The Stranger I Become: essays in reckless poetics, <\/i>published by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.turtlepointpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Turtle Point Press<\/a>, is forthcoming\u00a0in fall 2020.<\/h4>\n<h4>Coles&#8217; reckless endeavors in poetry began at a young age, when she came under the sway of, among other poets, Edna St. Vincent\u00a0Millay. &#8220;I\u2019ve always loved Millay,&#8221; she says, &#8220;and I think she doesn\u2019t get enough airing.
