She graduated from the University of Utah in 2013 with her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography & Digital Imaging and her Master of Art in Community Leadership with an Emphasis in Art & Culture from Westminster College in 2019. Sarah creates work exploring the intricacy of narrative through imagery and text reflecting on the collective human experience using cyanotype, film photography, and her own writing. Her current work and process reflect her journey exploring identity as being cyclical and evolving, the links personal ancestry manifests in prosperity, and the idea of destiny and healing as intertwined.

Artist Statement

“When we dream, we remember bits and pieces of the places our mind takes us to while we sleep. We slip into worlds in-between dimensions and time, blurring the boundaries between reality, fantasy, and waking memory. There are dreams that are sharp and stick in our memories for years after we have had them. There are also dreams that fade as we recall them over time and dreams that fade the instant we wake up, like water slipping between cracks in cupped hands. Dreams are linked to memory and over time become or replace memory, reflecting a duality and overlapping between conscious and unconscious, molding us into the complex people we are. Dreams are a phenomenon each person experiences and have an understanding of that extends across borders, backgrounds, language, ethnicities, genders, orientations, and cultures. Our dreams are personal narratives connecting us as living beings together. These shared fragments of dreams and imagery are a way to tell our stories and delve into the depths of what makes us human.”

Links

http://www.sarahlizmay.com

IMAGES

Sarah May, “Great Salt Lake Tapestry 3,”
