{"id":45575,"date":"2019-06-19T01:26:27","date_gmt":"2019-06-19T07:26:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/?p=45575"},"modified":"2019-06-23T01:48:57","modified_gmt":"2019-06-23T07:48:57","slug":"maggie-willis-changing-the-world-one-artful-step-at-a-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/maggie-willis-changing-the-world-one-artful-step-at-a-time\/","title":{"rendered":"Maggie Willis: Changing the World One Artful Step at a Time"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/IMG_4526.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-45578\" src=\"http:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/IMG_4526-350x467.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"467\" srcset=\"https:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/IMG_4526-350x467.jpg 350w, https:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/IMG_4526-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/IMG_4526-1200x1600.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a>At one point, Maggie Willis envisioned being a genetic engineer. \u201cI really love science and how things work, and the building blocks of life,\u201d says the Arizona native.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>But she found an unconventional way of expressing this same sentiment in art, and found a stronger pull towards the creative process. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0She grew up in a small town in eastern Oregon, then went east to e<\/span>arn a BFA at the Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia, where she studied painting, sculpture, and printmaking.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cI was not the most talented woman there by any stretch of the imagination,\u201d says Willis, but her hard work and dedication paid off, as she graduated valedictorian of her class.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Since then, Willis has used her passion and talent as an artist to better the community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">This year, Willis is one of five recipients of the mayor\u2019s artist awards.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>According to the Utah Arts Festival, \u201cthis year\u2019s recipients are not only talented artists but are using their creativity to confront issues that challenge our community \u2026 Salt Lake City\u2019s quality of life has improved due to their tireless work.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>With these qualifications, Willis is an obvious choice for the award, as her lifetime of work has impacted and transformed the minds of the people she has worked with. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">When looking at her work, the breadth of mediums and subject matter range from fauvist-like portraits and landscapes in oil, to community installations made from upcycled junk, to intricate, free-handed mandalas.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Regardless of the Willis work one may view, all of them have a unique zest of the artist&#8217;s personality in them.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Her works walk the fine line between eclectic and comprehensive, and they all feel lived-in.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This uniqueness transcends from her personal practice to community installations she coordinates and arranges.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_45580\" style=\"width: 253px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Screen-Shot-2019-06-23-at-9.44.51-AM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45580\" class=\"size-full wp-image-45580\" src=\"http:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Screen-Shot-2019-06-23-at-9.44.51-AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"243\" height=\"452\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-45580\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;Acceptance,&#8221; one of several &#8220;mood paintings&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p3\">Willis\u2019 career path has taken her all over the valley since coming to Salt Lake City in 2005<span class=\"s1\">.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span>From focusing on her personal practice, to festival jobs, to eventually becoming the interim director of the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art at one point, Willis has helped the community in various capacities.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Currently, she is the art director at the Eva Carlston Academy, where she works with troubled teenage girls and coordinates their fine arts activities.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>\u201cI love reinvigorating things in their lives and helping them to heal through art and realize their emotions in this way,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">This is not the first time Willis has worked with school-aged individuals, and she is an advocate for helping students to realize every aspect of the creative practice.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>\u201cProcess is more important than the actual outcome,\u201d says Willis. \u201cI\u2019m interested in revealing to my students the productive struggle of how to make something work \u2026 of how challenging creativity strengthens their ability to problem solve and think critically and practically, not only in art but in everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Willis also cites community installation as one of her favorite things to do, as she believes \u201cgetting away from consumerism and more towards conceptualism where the experience is the valuable takeaway rather than the actual object\u201d is an important lesson that everyone should learn, for the betterment of themselves and the world. She has been a regular at the Utah Arts Festival, where she has managed the activities at the youth-oriented Art Yard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">As for what\u2019s next, Willis cites intention in every aspect of her life, from her art to her garden, to her body.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>\u201cI want to subtly influence people through art and bring awareness to things in a way that is not shameful and argumentative.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Following the mantra &#8220;follow your deepest heartbreak,&#8221;
