Though she claims the books are for weighing down her paintings (which she paints on mulberry paper and mounts on wood), she admits that she\u2019s interested in them all. The studio also contains the many projects she\u2019s working on simultaneously, including drawings for an installation, a new painting, various collages and some old paintings recently returned from her gallery in New York City. She remembers looking at the SoHo News, with its photos of club culture, creative people with signature styles that defined them, using fabric, makeup, and design, and thinking, \u201cI want to make something fabulous.\u201d The innovation and experimentation of that time period created an impetus for Wilson\u2019s own work.<\/h4>\n<h4>As a child, she worked in both fine art mediums, like drawing and painting, and with art forms that were considered crafts, like sewing and embroidery. She admits she didn\u2019t have the patience for learning from someone else, saying, \u201cI\u2019m pretty determined.\u201d She taught herself by experimenting and learning from her mistakes. This sense of experimentation defines the evolution of her work.<\/h4>\n<h4>Her mother often took her to dance performances, from modern dance to the ballet. She became fascinated by the costumes, beautifully constructed sewn objects made by artists. \u201cI was always really into the costumes,\u201d she recalls. \u201cThe costumes were amazing. They were made by master costume makers and were made to be worn when someone was moving.\u201d She was so taken by the world of dance and costumes that when she attended Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, she initially thought she might study costume design with the theater department.<\/h4>\n<h4>Wilson opted to study fine arts instead, and after earning her BFA at Carnegie Mellon, she spent time as an intern at the Fabric Workshop in Philadelphia, developing surface designs for fabric. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t until I studied surface textile design that I got really hard core as an artist,\u201d she says, explaining the influence of design on her evolution. Wilson\u2019s early paintings were mostly of flowers or plants, and those helped her to gain some praise as a painter. Since moving to Utah in 2009, her work has responded to her new environment, and her characteristically dense work has taken on a sparser, desert-influenced palette and sense of space. This may be most evident in her best-known work, the design for the floor for the new Eccles Performing Arts Center in downtown Salt Lake City. It incorporates a familiar element from her paintings \u2014 a long, thin strip that could be fabric or could be a reed, snakes its way across the floor, circling in on itself \u2014 but the lone element on a broad expanse is a shift from her more densely adorned paintings.<\/h4>\n<h4>By contrast, her latest paintings, completed for a show at McKenzie Fine Art in New York in January, are even more densely packed than before, and perhaps more abstract. They are more tortured, she says, conceding that \u201cthere\u2019s no way out\u201d of those spaces. Despite the density of the work, and their tortuous aspect, she says painting actually comes a little more easily now. \u201cI\u2019m in a happy place,\u201d she says, with regard to her work. \u201cIt\u2019s not always that way,\u201d she admits. Working in other forms, like installation and <em>papier<\/em>\u2013<em>m\u00e2ch\u00e9<\/em>, allows her a freedom to use her crafty side. When she completed her MFA at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, her final show was a series of sculptures arranged as an installation. She describes these sculptures as \u201csewn figures\u201d which were bound and stuffed, revealing that, even with sculpture, she was combining textiles with density.<\/h4>\n<h4>Her newest work, which fills one room of Finch Lane Gallery, draws on her experience with sculpture, but combines three-dimensional forms with drawings and paintings. The exhibit, entitled <em>Goodbye Yellow Brick Road<\/em>, after Elton John\u2019s 1973 album, draws on the artists of the \u201870s and their influence on her creative development. The installation makes use of, as the title implies, a road (though not yellow nor brick), platform boots, a mirrored altarpiece and numerous traditional drawings and paintings in her iconic style, as well as ones that extend three-dimensionally beyond her normal surfaces.<\/h4>\n<h4>\u201cI just have to answer questions sometimes,\u201d Wilson says of her need for experimentation. She innovates and looks for new solutions to problems, in this case revisiting forms that she has used before, and combining them in new ways. She uses artwork as a way to interrogate ideas currently circulating in our cultures. Her paintings foreground and subvert this obsession by utilizing both a density that implies depth and a flat decorative surface that makes use of the aesthetics of design. Her new work continues to interrogate these ideas by using transparent surfaces and designs that seek to reveal and to hide.<\/h4>\n<h4>Currently, she\u2019s integrating pieces of old paintings and drawings into colorful collages that she says she doesn\u2019t know what to do with. Like her paintings, these collages are dense and colorful, inviting the viewer to once again meditate on the question of what is being covered up and what\u2019s being left out.<\/h4>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/2017_08_Laura-Sharp-Wilson-8076-Edit.jpg\"><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-41206\" src=\"https:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/2017_08_Laura-Sharp-Wilson-8076-Edit-333x500.jpg\" alt=\"Laura Sharp Wilson portrait\" width=\"333\" height=\"500\" \/><br \/>\n<\/a><br \/>\nShe explains the evolution and momentum of her work, saying, \u201cI just keep making it exciting. I just feel like if I keep making work, I keep it fresh, then stuff happens. I always have to have something to work towards.
