{"id":37364,"date":"2018-01-09T13:15:08","date_gmt":"2018-01-09T19:15:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/?p=37364"},"modified":"2018-09-13T22:20:35","modified_gmt":"2018-09-14T04:20:35","slug":"whats-new-for-laura-boardman-2018-is-about-dark-skies-and-new-ventures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/whats-new-for-laura-boardman-2018-is-about-dark-skies-and-new-ventures\/","title":{"rendered":"What\u2019s New: For Laura Boardman 2018 Is About Dark Skies and New Ventures"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/laura_boardman.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-44842\" src=\"http:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/laura_boardman-350x263.jpg\"  alt=\"Laura Boardman\" width=\"350\" height=\"263\" \/><\/a>Laura Boardman will open \u201cRabbit Studio\u201d in Teasdale in 2018, after purchasing the 80-year-old Main Street grocery store in July of 2015 and spending years on the remodel \u2014 despite advice from many general contractors to just tear it down. \u201cThe Rabbit now has a 1,500-square-foot studio for workshops, a place for me to paint when staying in our home in Torrey,\u00a0living quarters with bedroom, kitchen, running water and a bathroom,\u201d says the\u00a0artist whose home and studio in Salt Lake City is on the National Historic Register.<\/p>\n<p>In her \u201cprior life,\u201d before\u00a0going back to school at age 50 to study painting and drawing, Boardman\u00a0owned a full-service interior design firm specializing in historic buildings and healthcare and couldn\u2019t resist saving the only commercial building on Teasdale\u2019s Main Street. Artists Paul and Silvia Davis are right next door, \u201cso the four of us [with\u00a0Boardman\u2019s husband, Cal] see a lot of each other, enjoying talking art and sharing families\u2019 and friends\u2019 gatherings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_8281.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-44985\" src=\"http:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/IMG_8281-350x263.jpg\"  alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"263\" \/><\/a>While her original intent was to use the space just for her studio and as spare lodging\u00a0for\u00a0houseguests, Boardman says the Torrey area has been both a refuge and inspiration to her\u00a0for 22 years, and wants the\u00a0old building\u00a0to mean\u00a0more to the arts community and the general area as well. \u201cWayne County youth have a high interest in the arts, winning many national awards\u00a0. . . [and]\u00a0I do have some immediate plans to host visual arts, dance, music, and writing for youth,\u201d she says, as well as quilt shows\u00a0and work with the Entrada Institute.<\/p>\n<p>At some point she\u00a0will market the building to teachers for workshops to teach 10 or 12 students and to plein air artists to work and retreat on a weekly basis.<\/p>\n<p>And while Wayne County, the Great Salt Lake, and Skull Valley \u201chave been my muse for many years, and will not likely change,\u201d\u00a0 Boardman has\u00a0experienced \u201ca sudden interest in dark skies, the moon, and night light, that I have been working on.
