The genesis of the art school began in Tanforan, a racetrack just outside of San Francisco, where about 8000 people of Japanese descent were confined until Topaz was built. \u00a0Many of the internees were living in horse stalls turned into makeshift barracks with just a hurried whitewash over the walls and linoleum spread over the manure-covered floors.\u00a0Artists and teachers continued to produce art to document their circumstances and conditions of internment and to elevate their souls beyond their stark surroundings.\u00a0 The school remained a popular part of camp life until Topaz closed on Oct. 31, 1945.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/topazmuseum.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Topaz Museum<\/a><br \/>\n55 W Main St, Delta, UT 84624;<br \/>\nMon-Sat 10 a.m.\u20135 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; The Topaz Museum displays artworks created in the Japanese internment camp located in Delta, Utah.
