Photo by Chiana Rossiter.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cConvergence,\u201d a 20-foot-tall work of cast aluminum\u00a0forming a partial male\u00a0head that peers skyward, adds a sense of intrigue and mystery to the nondescript government building it flanks, just off I-215 in Taylorsville. Installed in October of 2017, Douwe Blumberg\u2019s sculpture is meant to give a visual representation of the various teams at work on mysteries inside the State of Utah Unified State Lab.<\/p>\n<p>It was selected this year by Americans for the Arts as one of the 49 most compelling public art projects created in the country in 2017. The list also features Hypersonic &amp; Plebian Design\u2019s \u201cLife of Tree,\u201d a kinetic sculpture that hangs in a stairwell\u00a0at the University of Utah\u2019s Crocker Science Center\u00a0and simulates a tree\u2019s reflection in water, a metaphor for how all scientific theories are only a reflection of the underlying reality. The movements were inspired by Wind flow patterns, water surface movement, seismic activity, and solar cycles inspired the sculpture\u2019s movements.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe best of public art can challenge, delight, educate, and illuminate,\u201d\u00a0said Robert L. Lynch, president and CEO of Americans for the Arts, when the roster of award-winners was announced. \u201cMost of all, public art creates a sense of civic vitality in the cities, towns, and communities we inhabit and visit.\u201d\u2019<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_53133\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\">\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-21-at-3.40.20-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-53133\" src=\"http:\/\/artistsofutah.org\/15Bytes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-21-at-3.40.20-PM-322x500.png\"  alt=\"\" width=\"322\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u201cLife of Tree.\u201d Photo by Chiana Rossiter.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Both installations are part of the Utah Public Art Program,\u00a0managed by Jim Glenn and the Division of Arts &amp; Museums, which has placed more than 230 works in Utah state facilities.\u00a0\u00a0The Public Art Program was created by the Utah State Legislature in 1985 with the passage of the Percent-for-Art-Act, a statute permits 1 percent of construction costs for new or remodeled State facilities to be added to the project for the commissioning or acquisition of art that is site specific to the facility and community.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cConvergence\u201d by Douwe Blumberg.
