\"Alex<\/a>SUNDAY BLOG READ<\/strong>\u00a0is your glimpse into the working minds and hearts of Utah\u2019s literary writers. Each month, 15 Bytes offers works-in-progress and \/ or recently published work by some of the state\u2019s most celebrated and promising writers of fiction, poetry, literary non-fiction and memoir.<\/p>\n

Today, 15 Bytes features Orem-based Alex Caldiero<\/strong>, performance poet and “sonosopher,” a practitioner of\u00a0a unique hybrid of sound, poetry, and philosophy. Caldiero recalls in verse\u00a0his emerging passion for performance\u00a0and for the sensual liturgical marriage\u00a0of physical space\u2014the church or temple\u00a0proper\u2014with bodily space. \u00a0In our selection today, we’ve included a sampling of works recently published in his volume Some Love<\/em> (Signature Books).<\/p>\n

Between wishful thinking and clear perception<\/p>\n

there is a gulf<\/p>\n

that resembles the mouth of all the women<\/p>\n

you will never kiss.<\/p>\n

If (and only if) there is such a thing as<\/p>\n

communication at a distance thru the<\/p>\n

intervention of no medium save thought<\/p>\n

itself by the mind fixed on its projection<\/p>\n

toward its object by no rational or obvious<\/p>\n

or known method other than the force that<\/p>\n

impels or propels it as it were out across<\/p>\n

and thru or translates it to the air, borne as<\/p>\n

if on wind or wing to its destination by no<\/p>\n

other means or conductor than the desire of<\/p>\n

the projector who is both feeler and means<\/p>\n

for it to spell the message of my heart to the<\/p>\n

inner ear of she who is far both in thought<\/p>\n

and place and by now out of mind except<\/p>\n

for some chance recollection randomized<\/p>\n

among life’s various objects to take heed<\/p>\n

and let enter as thought and yearning.<\/p>\n

If she calls within the hour<\/p>\n

it means she will leave me.<\/p>\n

If she wears the black dress<\/p>\n

it means she will make love with me.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

If she strokes her hair<\/p>\n

it means she has changed her mind.<\/p>\n

I work out elaborate systems<\/p>\n

of signs and significations<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

to explain her behaviors<\/p>\n

toward me.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It’s the only way I can<\/p>\n

make sense of this relationship<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

to sustain me for those times<\/p>\n

that it doesnt make sense.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I look for these signs<\/p>\n

because at times they makes sense.<\/p>\n

Dont make a martyr of your<\/p>\n

self for the sake of having people<\/p>\n

stop and stare at your stigmata.<\/p>\n

their fingers in the wounds.<\/p>\n

One of his students\u00a0described him as \u201ca weird cat, but\u00a0someone who loves what he teaches.\u201d\u00a0He has received grants from the National\u00a0Endowment for the Arts and Utah Performing\u00a0Arts Tour and awards from the\u00a0Association for Mormon Letters and Salt\u00a0Lake City mayor\u2019s office.
