Costa serves on the board of directors for the Utah Arts Festival and is co-director of the Festival’s National Composer Commissioning Program. On Sunday afternoon, NOVA Chamber Music Series premieres his new piece Whiplash for violin & piano. The piece was written for Hasse Borup, violinist and Head of String and Chamber Music Studies at the University of Utah’s School of Music. Whiplash is a 3-movement work. The composer describes it as follows:

“This work expresses raw emotions and aggression out front. The music is direct in a rock-driven sense, capturing its essence but not resorting to imitation. This directness is emphasized through a number of hammering chords, rhythmic vibrancy, dissonant abstractions, spontaneity, and a distinct melodic focus. It is not about beauty per se but rather, an aggressive “in-your-face” emotional connection with attitude. This is especially relevant to the first and third movements. Regarding the second movement, Suicide Note, the emotional landscape deals with feelings of isolation, abrupt anger, numbness, and despair – all of which fluctuate in an unstable whirlwind of feelings that are bottled-up inside when it seems like there is no way out.”

There will also be two Arnold Schoenberg pieces on the program. Ode to Napoleon, ops 41. and Shoenberg’s Lieder, opus 1. Arnold Schoenberg (1874 – 1951) was an Austrian composer and painter, associated with the expressionist movement in German poetry and art, and leader of the Second Viennese School. His musical approach, both in terms of harmony and development, has been one of the most influential of 20th-century musical thought. Ode to Napoleon (for reciter, string quartet, and piano) was composed during World War II as a protest against tyranny. Schoenberg uses Lord Byron’s poem castigating Napoleon. For this piece, NOVA has invited special guest, baritone Timothy Jones. With his strong character and stage presence, this will undoubtedly be a passionate performance.
Sunday, May 10, 2015
3:00 p.m.
Libby Gardner Concert Hall
1375 E.
